Most of my work includes animals with a much more subdued colouring such as big cats, elephants and rhinos so over the past couple of years I have been experimenting with brighter coloured subjects. On a visit to Whipsnade Zoo I took a few photographs of these Scarlet Macaws which came out so well that I could not resist doing a drawing of them together. The birds were being shown on a handler’s arm and the poses in a single photograph were not quite right so I used a computer program to merge two photographs and then substituted the arm for a branch. The leaves were added to create a complimentary colour and help lead the eye around the picture.
