I used drafting film as my support, with Berol Karisma and Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils. These two very different pencils work well together on film. (Karisma being soft and waxy, Polychromos are harder and dryer). I don’t like to think just how many pencil strokes went into this picture to enable me to get the different textures of this animal’s fur.
A trip to Bristol zoo, one less than perfect Sunday, produced a crop of somewhat mediocre reference photographs, but on looking through them a second time, I found one which was pretty near perfect. The sun had come out for a few short moments, and this Red-ruffed lemur had stopped his bouncing around just long enough for me to get a good shot. The back lighting was good and his pose held a tension that is typical of this animal’s energy and wariness, producing a good reference photograph to work from.
