Neil Houghton : A Change of seasons

‘A Change of Seasons

Pencils: Prismacolor and Polychromos
Paper: Rising Stonehenge
36 x 24cm

This painting, showing a hailstorm passing over Arkengarthdale in N Yorks. was done from a photographic reference. I used a black and white photo as I didn’t want to copy the photo but to really think about the colours I used. It is Spring but Winter still refuses to release its grip, although out of the icy wind you can feel the warmth in the sun which has just returned and reflects the still wet road after the storm. It is easy to imagine this cloud as a living, breathing entity venting its anger upon the landscape. Perhaps it is the ghost of a long departed Viking raider?
