A new section on the UKCPS website, this is a list of some tools that you might or might not find useful, with hopefully some indication of how they might be used and where to get them. Erasers

I was once in a shop where a customer asked the lady behind the counter if you could erase coloured pencil and was told you could not! I jumped on her. Yes you can - but possibly not completely - some pigments, as with watercolours, are staining pigments and will only erase with a few drops of bleach. This is not recommended! Less drastic measures include those shown here.

1. My all time favourite Boys Toy - the battery operated eraser. This is made by Sakura, and is available from Jacksons Art catalogue (0870 770 0360)where it is called the Skylite eraser, for around £35 - but Christmas is coming. You get 10 spare eraser heads, and 2 aaa batteries are not included. See Angela Holt's article on how to use this drawing tool.

2. For a couple of years, the Sakura was the only battery operated eraser available in this country. Recently Office World have started selling the Helix version. This is not as good - the rubber part is thinner and softer, and the motor does not last as long. But .... it is only around £4!! Get three!!

June 2005; Stop Press! Jakar have just come out with their own battery operated eraser, which is funkier looking, and costs even less than the Helix - get 5! This is probably the eraser you will find in the shops now, as the Helix (above) seems to have disappeared from Staples shelves now.

3. Blutack - work it well, dab it onto the cp, and lift. It is tackier than a putty rubber. Shape it to a point to lift a small area, or roll it on like a sausage to lift a whole layer of colour. White-tack is preferred by some as it leaves less of a mark.

4. Putty Rubber - works almost as well as Blutack. Some prefer it as it is felt to be less oily.

5. An ordinary plastic eraser will work on most cp - not all. The problem with it is that it smudges and spreads the cp, pushing it into the paper. The battery operated eraser lifts pigment as it spins.

6. Slightly better is a smaller eraser that can be shaped - I like this one which can be sharpened to a nice edge.
