You
can put coloured pencil onto almost anything, and many artists have! I
have seen work on gourds, wood, canvas, and modelling clay amongst
other things. What you have to appreciate is that the support medium -
the surface - will affect what you end up with. It is then just a case
of trying loads of different support media and seeing if you LIKE what
you end up with! To help you decide a little bit, here are some
comments on some of the many possible support media. Most of these come
from the results of a survey carried out by Lesley Crawford of papers
used by UKCPS members in the Spring of 2003, and some are other
comments from various cp artists. Lesley introduced her survey saying:
WHICH PAPER? The twenty responses to
the paper questionnaire made interesting reading. I've listed below the
papers that were mentioned, along with comments about them, which are
sometimes contradictory! A favourite paper is a subjective thing, with
each person's artistic requirements affecting their decision on paper
type. Also the hardness or softness of the pencils you use will make a
difference. Remember, these are the views of you artists out there, not
the UKCPS itself. The best thing to do is to try as many paper types as
you can, but hopefully the information below (in no particular order)
will help you make a selection. Many thanks to all who the time to send
me their views.
