In 2003, 2004 and 2005, the Society held an Exhibition at the Cumberland Pencil Factory, in Keswick, thanks to the generosity of one of our sponsors, Derwent Pencils. This exhibition differs in two ways from the main Annual Exhibition. First, it is not juried, and has been run on a first come first served basis. Second, it is for coloured pencils and other media, with the stipulation that cp should make up at least 75% of the pigmented surface of the work. This gives artists freedom to use underpaintings, and to combine cp with other media. Prizes have been awarded for this exhibition, and the 2005 Prizewinners are shown below. UKCPS First Prize:

Karen Coulson, "Lions of Longleat"

This picture is a drawing using Caran D’Ache Prismalo and Supracolor pencils which are my favourite brand. I like their hardness for fine detail. I use a block of Winsor and Newton 140 lb watercolour paper. I like the texture and the opportunity to add water if required.. I drew this picture for the Marwell Zoo Art Society summer exhibition 2004. I thought the lionesses had that “cute look” which is so appealing. The photos I worked from were taken at Longleat, hence the title.

UKCPS Second Prize:

Kay Wallbanks, "Abstract Pansy and Butterfly

Produced on Winsor and Newton Bristol board 250gsm using Caran D’ache Prismalo Aquarelle pencils. Pure CP. Nature’s colours so strong, her creatures so delicate… Inspired by the pure strength of colours and patterns to be found in nature I used a petal of a pansy as my starting point for this illustration. Developing the shapes within the flower to create an abstract form. To complement this I chose to include a butterfly within the composition, which may be seen on the flower as if entering another, rather secret and beautiful world. Portraying the delicate forms of nature within the power of nature’s colours itself.

UKCPS Third Prize:

Judith Waugh, "Monkey Tales"

Karisma, Verithin and Derwent pencils have been used with Rising Stonehenge paper. This is a picture of a baby Spider Monkey with its mother ‘Fay’. The baby was born in August 2004 and although Fay is blind she is still a wonderful mother. Watching them over the last few months has been a wonderful experience. In the picture I imagine that Fay is telling her daughter a story so I have called the picture “Monkey Tales”. My friend Pam Mansfield runs an Exotic Pet Refuge. I take photographs of her animals and do pictures of them in coloured pencils. Then I have prints made of my pictures and sell them to raise funds on their “Open Days”.

The President's Award

Gary Theobald, "Bogart"

Gary Theobald, "Bogart"

I chose this image because of its old style and Bogart’s interesting features. The support media is a grey/brown shade of Canson Mi-Tientes paper. I have used the pitted side of the paper to help provide a texture to the face, coat and hat. A limited palette of 3 colours has been used to create this monochrome, old fashioned style of image. From the Derwent Artists range of pencils, Primrose Yellow and Burnt Umber. The third colour, the paper itself, constitutes the midtones.

The Derwent Award

Ann James Massey, "Eliza Ann Harker Bennion"

Ann James Massey, "Eliza Ann Harker Bennion"

This drawing is on Bristol paper (plate finish). The initial line sketch was drawn with graphite pencil and the finish was drawn entirely with a Prismacolor #935 black pencil. I chose to draw Eliza as she is my Great Grandmother.

The Popular Vote Winner
