I wanted a tourists' eye of London, something entirely characteristic,
but
without any of the most familiar London landmarks. This view
of Fleet
Street, on a drizzly summer afternoon, seemed to be distinctive while
presenting various challenges.
My love of contrasts, of colour, shape, and texture found this street
scene
appealing. While most of the painting is taken up by the
rather sedate
foreground, a sort of textural study of the various street and sidewalk
gray-greens -- broken by the blue curves of the tourist and his
umbrella -- the
background cacophony of colours and shapes implies both the noise and
activity
of a busy metropolis, with the contrasting quiet conventionality of the
building facades.
