I
took the photograph for this drawing whilst on
a visit to Whipsnade zoo in May 2008. It is of a young Mandarin duck
which was
perched on a log cleaning itself. What appealed to me was how scruffy
and
untidy he looked compared to the older Mandarin ducks. I decided to
draw him as
he was in the photo but felt the log he was perched on was too
obtrusive, so
changed this to light coloured rippled sand, and put a few footprints
to
indicate some movement.
