As a wildlife artist, I spend as much time as I
can tromping through wildlife refuges and State & National parks hunting
for subjects. The racoon is not easy to capture, so I jumped at the opportunity
to photograph them as part of a wildlife art workshop in Kalispell, MT, last
year. Two of these critters were handled by a trainer in a natural setting in
gorgeous Montana. I was so delighted by their scampering antics I almost forgot
to “focus” on photographing them for reference material! I cropped the original
reference photo that I worked from to maximise the sense of the racoon’s
creeping down through the grasses to the water. He was truly behaving like a
masked prowler. I think the only thing he stole that day was my heart!
