‘Squirrel Yearning’ is based on several photographs
that I took of a friend’s wire fox terrier. The dog had been rescued from an
abusive situation, was trained as a therapy dog and had competed in “go to
ground” competitions, but had gotten on in years and would now lay on the couch
and watch the squirrels in the back yard. Often he would jump at the window and
bark, but his hunting days were done. I changed a number of the photograph
details. I made the dog a little lighter so that I could find the texture of
his coat. The window had numerous panes of glass; I simplified it and added the
tree. I particularly liked the pillow and couch cover for their colours and
textures and I left them in. I feel their textures contrast nicely with the
dog’s coat texture.
