Nik Curry

It seems to be a well-worn cliché, but I came to pencil crayons by chance, having been given a tin of Caran d’Ache Prismalo pencils as a Christmas gift from a relative. Combining this with my life-long passion for motor sport, I have found a niche in the market, producing very precise graphic drawings of all of the top competitors in motor sport.

My name is Nik Curry, and I was born in Goole, east Yorkshire, in 1956. I attended Graphic design courses at my home city of York and at Derby Art Colleges in the early 1970’s. I produced my first motor sport pictures with gouache paints, as this was the preferred medium at the Colleges. But in 1983 came the transition to pencils. I gradually progressed to producing original drawings and having prints made.

I use Caran d’Ache Prismalo 1 and Supracolor Soft water-soluble pencils. A recent addition has been the Caran d’Ache Pablo, non-soluble pencils. This distinction has never mattered to me, as I never use water or other solvents with any of the pencils. The surface that all of my work is produced onto is Frisk CS10 Media 6 Artboard. This is a board that I have used from my days at Art College, and I have never found anything to compare with it for the quality of its smooth surface and its strength when taking the pressure of the pencil for solid colours. It has a coated surface, which allows me to scratch highlight details in using a scalpel, or scratch away any minor mistakes without leaving telltale signs.

My usual procedure when compiling a drawing is, having selected the subject, I draw it onto some mountboard, and then I trace this drawing down onto my Artboard. The first areas I work on are usually the tyres and other areas that are mostly solid black. For all the main colours, I use Prismalo 1 pencils first, then for shading I use Supracolor. I find that the softer Supracolor pencil will work better and bind more with the surface underneath. For my type of work, one of the main advantages is that I can use rulers and French Curves for all of my outlines, giving me a strong solid line to work up to.

At present I do not have a website, but please contact me if you wish to purchase prints.
