Richard,
aka Chumley, is a Nottingham-born artist, currently living close to the
picturesque Peak District of Derbyshire.
He
became interested in all things art-related at school where he
developed his drawing technique using graphite pencils and pen
& ink. Richard planned to go to Art College but unfortunately,
he was disappointed with the content of the courses available at the
time and discouraged when advised that graphic artists were
'ten-a-penny'. He decided to enroll on a Civil Engineering course
instead and completed his studies at Nottingham Trent University. A
career in civil engineering beckoned and Richard is now a Senior
Engineer with Nottingham City Council.
You
might think that civil engineering and art have little common ground
but there were many opportunities for Richard to continue producing
artwork - artistic impressions of schemes were needed and Richard
grabbed the opportunity to use his artistic ability at work. His
colleagues were impressed with his talent and word soon got round that
if you wanted a drawing of something, Richard was your man!
If
something amusing happened in the office, shortly afterwards a cartoon
(signed 'Chumley') would appear on the wall with caricatures of the
people involved. The market has since expanded and Richard now uses much
of his spare time to complete commissions for celebration cards,
posters and publicity material, not to mention private commissions for
portraits and many other subjects.
Cartoons
and caricatures are still very popular but pointillism is one of
Richard's favourite disciplines where he uses just an every day ball
point pen. The downside is the time it takes to produce each piece but
the results are worth every hour at the drawing board, as you can see
from the examples on his site. The black and white drawing shown took
46 hours to complete and consists of over 300,000 dots. Coloured
pencils are then applied to each side of the Mylar film to create that
photographic realism.
Richard
is always looking for new techniques to try and has now entered the
world of coloured pencil art. He has already had the privilege of
having his drawings shown in Ann Kullberg's web site e-magazine and
Richard is adding new CP works all the time on his own web site of
www.ChumleysArt.com so keep watching.
